About Alison’s career
Alison is New Zealand’s most experienced medical retina specialist with a particular interest in macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. She has over 25 years’ experience at a specialist level improving and preserving vision in patients with complex and challenging retinal problems. She has been at the forefront of many innovations in the management of retinal disease over the last two decades.
Alison is also an experienced refractive cataract surgeon and has a wide experience of general ophthalmology.
She is a fellow of both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) and The Australian and New Zealand Colleges of Ophthalmology. Alison is a graduate of Birmingham University (1990). Her post-graduate training and fellowships were based in Bristol (UK), Auckland and Sydney.
She is also a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retina Specialists and the Oceania Retinal Association. She actively participates in optometrist, general practitioner, and junior ophthalmology training.
Alison is the lead specialist for the medical retina service at Auckland Eye offering state of the art digital angiography, OCT, retinal laser, photodynamic therapy and intravitreal therapies.

Alison enjoys the human aspect of her work and feels that individual care is central to ensuring her patients can maximise their vision potential.
Medical retina can provide the opportunity for long term relationships with patients and Alison finds it extremely rewarding to see her patients enjoying all in life that improved vision can bring.
She has been part of a visiting specialist team to the Cook Islands making many visits over the last 20 years.
Alison has two daughters, who are both doctors and is married to a gynaecology and fertility specialist. She has a great love of music and is a chair donor to the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. She sings regularly as part of a community choir. Alison’s holidays usually involve tramping, skiing or sailing.
